Debut full length States from Australia's The Paper Kites is one of those great finds that you'd like to keep all to yourself. Originally founded as the singing, songwriting duo of Sam Bentley and Christina Lacey, the Melbourne-based twosome expanded to a quintet to fill out their instrumental sound and have released two fine EP's -- Woodland and then Young North -- while two of their videos, "Bloom" and "Featherstone," have had youtube traffic topping six million views. States, just out now on Nettwerk, finds the band stretching beyond the amiable, harmonious folk pop of their EP's and heading into darker territory, lyrically and musically, and featuring what Bentley terms "strange little noises." “We really pushed our soundscapes and composition," he adds. "I’m interested in the things beyond a song: textures, adding strings, brass, touches like that." For a taste of the band's new "states," check out the dramatic art/pop underpinnings (and stinging guitar lines) of "A Lesson From Mister Gray" and then click through below for the pitch-perfect, Lacey-led "Cold Kind Hand."
