As concept albums go, I Slept Through the 80's from New York folk/pop trio The Big Bright is about as simple and straightforward as they come: take classic alt-pop hits from the stylistic pioneers of that bygone era -- Depeche Mode, INXS, The Cure, Tears For Fears, etc. -- and reimagine the songs as lovely ballads and lullabies or what one critic termed "new wave nocturnes." Keyboardist Glenn Patscha and guitarist Fiona McBain of the fine roots/folk and gospel band Ollabelle and fellow New York singer/songwriter Liz Tormes handle their melodic "babies" with love and tenderness as they surround them in a warm, lush sonic blanket: The Bangles' "Walk Like An Egyptian" becomes a sweet piano ballad while Yaz's "Only You" is transformed from electro-pop gem to soothing acoustic lullaby with the trio's entwined vocals the epitome of angelic harmony.
