Shout Out Louds - Optica

Forthcoming fourth album Optica (February 26, Merge) from Sweden's alt-popping Shout Out Louds finds the band looking to follow up their fine, frill-resistent 2010 album Work with what they describe as an "eagerness to please no one but ourselves this time around." Where Work found frontman/songwriter Adam Olenius and SOL working with respected indie producer Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, The Shins), Optica was recorded over an 18-month period at an intimate Stockholm studio and produced by the band themselves with "sixth man" and engineer Johannes Berglund. And unlike Work's stripped down approach, Optica's self-described "playful" new songs like the densely layered "Blue Ice" return the band to the elaborate brass n' string arrangements of their 2007 pop opus Our Ill Wills.
