RADAR: Sumie

Drawing on her mix of Japanese/Swedish heritage, Sumie Nagano creates gently beguiling acoustic music with the whisper of haunting minor-chord magic. The quietude that permeates her impossibly lovely self-titled full-length debut (December 2, Bella Union) and successor to her 2010 EP Transit, is partly a result of her surroundings at her home in Gothenburg. “It was not a style or a sudden choice but more me playing my guitar and having two small children so I could not make much noise,” she says. “But I also love minimal and delicate music, so that felt like a natural direction for me." Produced by Dustin O'Halloran, the pianist/composer who knows a thing or two about the ambient qualities of stark solo works, songs like "Store Talked Windows" (video below) celebrate the beauty of intimate song crafting, stripped bare production where just the sound of an acoustic guitar and a voice can fill the senses.
