RADAR: Ryan Hobler

From jaunty, piano-centric Harry Nilsson-styled pop/rock to luminous acoustic tracks that recall Paul Simon, New York tunesmith Ryan Hobler runs his varied stylistic bases with ease. There's a light touch at work here, nothing too ponderous or severe, a modern-day Brill Building craftsman with a sandy tenor who knows his way around a melody. A full album The Elusive Yes is in the works for 2014 with producer Andy Baldwin, known for his work with Saint Lucia, Bjork and the like-minded Wakey! Wakey!, and new songs like the excellent "See What You're Doing To Me" demonstrate that Hobler can also delve into the darker, more Americana-focused indie territory as well. The challenge will be finding a more consistent tone while keeping true to his own varied inclinations.
