RADAR: Fossil Collective

Some debut albums arrive with a preponderance of promise, of things not yet realized but holding great rewards down the line. Others -- a rare few -- emerge from the speakers fully formed, mature, confident and self-aware of their place in the world. Fossil Collective's quietly stunning debut Tell Where I Lie (April 8, Hit & Run UK) is definitely from column B, one of those special albums that simply knocks you over with a feather. David Fendrick and Jonny Hooker take understatement to a sublime new stratosphere, turning one gorgeously rendered line after another to create songs that sound simultaneously classic -- like the most stately '70s Laurel Canyon folk/rock hymns -- and, despite the band's dusty moniker, assuredly contemporary. Latest track "Under My Arrest" boasts, among other wonderful things, an absurdly spacious and pristine production, as if The Blue Nile had been reinvented as some serene folkie outfit, a gentle rhythmic bed formed with just the persistent strum of an acoustic guitar and a staggered, ticking drum beat. Most recently found as U.K. touring partners for The Civil Wars, Fossil Collective are sure to find welcome reception on these shores.
