We find it puzzling that Newton Faulkner, the red-dreaded multi-platinum-selling Brit singer/songwriter, has never made much of dent on this side of the Atlantic. From his breakout 2007 debut album Handbuilt By Robots to his #1 charting Write It On Your Skin last year, Faulkner has found immense success with his intricate and dazzling guitar playing and the plethora of melodic hooks embedded in his songs. Who knows? Perhaps his angst-free sincerity and lack of arty pretense. Maybe his major label that spent on his debut and then tallied up the low return on investment. Fourth album Studio Zoo, out this week in the U.K., has a more intimate feel to it thanks to Faulkner's locking himself up in his studio for five weeks while he live-streamed the process 24/7 (and had some guests including Mumford's Son Ted Dwayne). "Waiting On You" is one of the sessions' best results, a combination of fretwork virtuosity -- check out how the guitar becomes the rhythm section -- and Faulkner's skill in crafting an indelible melody.
