DC Music News Feed: The always interesting Devendra Banhart will release his eight studio album Mala on March 12 via new label home Nonesuch. Banhart co-produced the album with Noah Georgeson, his longtime bandmember, and recorded it at his home studio in Los Angeles before relocating to New York City. Banhart and Georgeson play most of the instruments on Mala, borrowing most of the equipment and picking up a vintage Tascam recorder discovered in a local pawn shop. “A lot of early hip-hop had been made on [the Tascam],” says Banhart. “And knowing my songs are not hip-hop whatsoever, we thought it would be interesting to see how these kinds of songs would sound on equipment that was used to record our favorite rap.
