“I’m influenced by the old stuff,” says New Mexico singer/songwriter Max Gomez. “To me, that’s the best music.” Though only 25, Gomez has been performing for a decade around his hometown of Taos, drawing on his early influences of traditional blues and alt-country legends like Townes Van Zant, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson. Recently signed to Americana specialists New West records, Gomez has been completing tracks for his debut album If I Could Rule the World due October 9. “I try to be more of a disguised lyricist,” says Gomez of his writing process. “The songs I write are not real straightforward. You have to decode them. I like when the listener has to create their own story, rather than be told what’s happening.” For a couple of samples, check out the extra-fine new focus track "Run From You" along with an early version of the album's title track below, a song we think you'll be hearing a lot more of soon.
