Are you sitting down? Really? Then you're ready for "Closer", the headspinning new song from the indie darlings Tegan and Sara. This is one of those "forget everything you know" moments for the twins as they do a miraculous job of pop reinvention thanks in no small part to Greg Kursten (Lily Allen, Pink, The Shins), the go-to L.A. producer (and one-half of The Bird and the Bee) who knows his way around a hit single. The only issue might be: a hit single from what era? The danceable beats, surging synths and a sing-a-long chorus that is equal parts precious and precocious all add up to late 80's radio but, hey, after suffering through American auto-tune hip/pop for the last decade this rush of lush Euro-pop meets Go-Go's energy sounds positively refreshing. And did we ever stop to think that this song might actually be aimed more at an international audience anyway? A complete surprise and a welcome one at that. New as-yet-untitled T & S album drops early next year. More on "Closer" @ Rolling Stone.
