Jadea Kelly - Clover

Clover, the second album from Canadian singer/songwriter Jadea Kelly is an intriguing amalgam of city and country influences, the nexus of where the wide open spaces of acoustic folk and Americana meet up with the influences of dark and gritty electric art/pop. Or as Kelly's bio puts it, "a unique union of Iris De Ment’s vocal ache with heavy Portishead ambience and percussion." Recorded to analog, Clover reverberates with smarts and a seemingly endless supply of melodic hooks, Kelly's vocals leading the way through a production that sounds like it was created to be played at 2am on some deserted, echoing side street. "This was the first time in our recording history that we had tracked without the trance of a glowing computer screen” says Kelly. “Instead of judging a song based on how it appears and physically looks on screen, we closed our eyes and chose a take on how it felt." The ticking beat of "Saintly Stare" quickly moves to a richer pulse of shimmering guitar riffs and rhythmic bass lines, Kelly's singing a cool, detached instrument of understated emotion.
