Fans of producer/instrumentalist Ethan Johns might be using the title of his latest album If Not Now Then When? as an appropriate query regarding its belated U.S. release July 30. Johns, best known for his work with Ryan Adams, Laura Marling and Kings of Leon, first made the new project available via vinyl to indie shops in the U.K. last November and retailers across the pond since February before arriving stateside, with little fanfare, next week. Not surprisingly, the creation of the project was as loose and freewheeling as its marketing strategy with Johns enlisting a number of studio cohorts (including Johns and Marling) to help out while the roles of producer and player were reversed. "I'm asking them to trust me and so I then have to put myself in that position," says Johns. "I have to look to the people I respect and admire in the room and go, 'Okay guys, what do you think?'" Touching folk, country, blues and Brit Invasion rock, INNTW? is an ambling, likable and low-keyed success.
