DC April 16 New Release Recap

Even the legendary April '13 storms and floods of Chicago can't keep the DC New Release Recap from rearing its head this week -- albeit a bit late. Loss of power simply strengthens our resolve. A long list of releases this week headed up by a new album from the always-great Amy Speace, the new project from Justin "Bon Iver" Vernon and pals, The Shouting Matches, and the fine live tribute to the late, great Nick Drake: Way to Blue: Songs of Nick Drake. This week also saw new releases from Sam Beam -- aka Iron and Wine -- along with Yeah Yeah Yeahs, rising Brit piano popper Tom Odell, Kim Richey, Fall Out Boy, Futurebirds, Luke Sital-Singh, JJ Grey & Mofro, Carla Bruni and, last but certainly not least, Steve Earle. Check out our featured title overviews with links to stream music and our full DC listing below...

Nashville-based performing songwriter Amy Speace may have some advice in her How to Sleep in a Stormy Boat (April 16), but these are revelations emerging from a particularly tumultuous period of her own life. The grief on the death of a parent, lost love and, most tellingly, the scare that came when she lost her voice to a case of acute laryngitis -- an event that brought panic and tears before her long road to recovery. As the second album following her move from New York to Nashville a few years back, Speace's gorgeous Stormy Boat, once again produced by friend Neilson Hubbard, proves the ideal vessel for her starkly personal songs...more DC

Loose and playful are hardly terms you'd normally throw around when describing the music of Justin Vernon, the Grammy-winning, falsetto-wielding critical darling who makes soulful, introspective modern folk music with his band Bon Iver. So we can be taken aback just a bit when taking in Grownass Man (April 16, , the amusingly-titled and surprisingly rambunctious and ramshackle new album from Vernon (minus the falsetto this time) and his buds Phil Cook and Brian Moen as The Shouting Matches. While there are touches of Vernon's earnest thoughtfulness throughout the project, Grownass Man is rich in the classic -- and basic -- blues/rock tradition...more DC

Lisa Hannigan, Robyn Hitchcock, Vashti Bunyan, Luluc, Scott Matthews and Teddy Thompson are among the artists saluting the late British folk pioneer Nick Drake on Way To Blue: The Songs of Nick Drake (April 16, Storysound). Produced by Drake's original studio man Joe Boyd, the fifteen performances are culled from a series of 2010 tribute concerts in the U.K., Australia and Italy that critics hailed as "revelatory" (Times of London) and "spellbinding" (Guardian). "In my opinion, the only way to make a tribute record work is to get everyone together in the same place so there's a unity of sound and spirit," Boyd tells NPR...more DC

We first tipped you to Londoner Luke Sital-Singh last summer with the release of his debut EP we described as "blissful folk hymns that fall somewhere between the acoustic pomp of Damien Rice and the moody falsetto laments of Justin "Bon Iver" Vernon. Since then, Sital-Singh has opened for Martha Wainwright, played SXSW, wowed critics and brought his own pin-drop inspiring songs to countless clubs around the U.K. This is, after all, the young man who opined that "good music should lock your feet and jaw to the floor." New four-track Old Flint EP expands on the promise of his extraordinary debut and once again renders the term "folk music" as hopelessly inadequate...more DC
