BRIEFS: Southern Gothic Tales

Danish singer/songwriter Anders H. Riis fronts Southern Gothic Tales, a Copenhagen indie outfit that, like their name might suggest, focuses on distinctly Americana-styled dark folk songs while filtering them all through bleak Scandinavian reserve. Third album I'm An Island (March 17) reaffirms Riis' left-of-center acoustic vision -- this is, after all, the guy who wrote the song "Fuck Me Up With Words and Wine" on his last outing -- while fashioning songs that have a ragged and rustic Neil Young-ian appeal. Title track and creepy/whimsical video, featuring Riis wearing a monkey head while, among other things, getting a lap dance in Vegas, sums up the surreal SGT approach. But then just when you think it's not working -- or working too hard -- it pulls you in and holds you tight. Oddly compelling, nearly addictive.
