In 2005, Kentucky-born Dawn Landes flew to Paris and her liaison amoureuse with the French people, music and culture began. The feeling, happily, was mutual as Gallic radio and critics picked up on Landes' early recordings and her debut album picked up by a regional label. Landes toured the countryside, picking up the language and becoming enamored with the music iconic performers like Serge Gainsbourg and Francoise Hardy. Landes salutes the early 60's French pop style known as Yé-Yé with Mal Habillée (Badly Dressed), a seven track EP released yesterday that's also available with a large picture book (and cool ebook, too). With Tunde Adebimpe (TV on the Radio) and Matthew Caws (Nada Surf) on backing vocals and songwriting assistance from her cadre of French music friends, Landes makes Mal Habillée an effervescent diversion ironique from her usual alt-country fare. “Writing in a new language is a beautiful contrast,” says Landes. “You have the wonder and vocabulary of a child but the desires of an adult.”
