Listen: Grace Woodroofe - "Battles"

The New York Times music critic John Pareles describes Grace Woodroofe having "a voice made for melancholy and danger". That quality that comes into hazy focus in the cool vibed and slinky "Battles", an imaginative role-playing lament from her new album Always Want. Riding atop a skittering and jazzy drum-n-bass flair, Woodroofe's smoky voice beckons with a distant and detached air as she sings "I never thought I'd be a middle aged waitress" over and over.
