Toronto singer/songwriter Jonas Bonnetta is the creative force behind Evening Hymns, a loose-limbed, loosely structured amalgam producing earthy, stark and spacious indie folk as clear and bracing as the Canadian winter sky. Forthcoming spring album Spectral Dusk follows up the acclaimed 2009 debut Spirit Guides, an album filled with songs about the felling of trees and rural life steeped in the closeness of nature (one track feature the sound of falling rain). Judging from excellent lead track "Asleep In the Pews", Bonnetta (above with Hymns-mate Sylvie Smith) is ratcheting up the production this time around, maintaining the meandering lo-fi acoustic melodies while tastefully fleshing out the sound. Dusk was recorded in a cabin in Northern Ontario and includes support from members of Timber Timbre, City and Colour and Wooden Sky.
