Sarah Siskind - Novel can mean something new. Novel can also be a story to tell. Revered Tennessee songwriter, who counts Alison Krauss and Bon Iver as admirers, sees both in her latest D.I.Y. solo project...Siskind's '09 album Get Louder was lauded as "a masterpiece" by Bonnie Raitt and was the recipient of a Nashville Music Award for Best Americana Album...An extended stay in Colorado allowed Siskind to think about a new solo-only strategy for her songs: writing, recording and playing all the instruments herself, sometimes using makeshift percussion -- oatmeal boxes, salt cannisters -- alone in various rooms of her house // Release: Novel (September 27) // Sounds like: while a times we miss the fuller production (and killer backing band) of Get Louder, Novel gives us a different and revealing view of the artist named by many as one of our best songwriters...Siskind's crystalline, soaring vocals have an intimate, unvarnished quality, a mix of powerful pipes and tenderness...
Quote: “Growing up, the thought of using technology to connect with another human never crossed my mind. People dropped by, there were hours upon hours of sitting on a floor talking with friends and family, and we listened to and played music together." What we like: the theme of uncharted exploration and discovery permeates not only the attitude but the sound and spirit of songs like the shimmering meditation "Yellow and Blue" ("Drop me off on the side of the road....I would not know where I was and I would not care...it would take me somewhere")...Siskind's achingly beautiful vocal harmonies atop the piano and guitar lines of the lovely title track set the stage for one of the album's most memorable melodies...
