Michael Kiwanuka has been turning heads with his own brand of vintage soul and loose-fitting Nick Drake-styled folk via a pair of pretty amazing EP's, the most recent of which -- I'm Getting Ready -- just dropped last week in the U.K. Kiwanuka, born of Uganda parents and raised in London, was handpicked by Adele to open for her on a series of continental shows and will also be playing support on her U.S. dates beginning October 7. Kiwanuka has been compared to iconic soulmen Bill Withers and Marvin Gaye with his laidback acoustic R+B and the warm vibe generated at his captivating live performances have made him one of the hottest tipped new artists in the U.K. and Europe. There's been a tendency to hang some ornamental retro-soul sounds (flutes anyone?) on Kiwanuka's productions -- and we can understand the desire to place his music in the glow of nostalgia. But we think the music is best unadorned and unfettered. You can compare with the two very different tracks below...
