Astrid Williamson - Pulse - We’re used to being surprised by this fine Scottish songwriter who has consistently impressed with a rare gift for moody and melodic folk/pop...But nothing quite prepared us for this bold creative left turn that takes Williamson’s songcraft and reinvents it in a completely new, electronically powered incandescent light. Mimi Goese and Ben Neill - Songs for Persephone - Five years in the making, this ambitious work of grand art/pop is a compelling and dramatic synthesis of Neill's sweeping electronica and swelling symphonic layers utilizing touchstones of 19th century romantic classics mixed with Goese's captivating vocals and lyrics: think Cocteau Twins meet Bat for Lashes...the project was originally commissioned for the NY indie stage and presented to rave reviews last year...more DC
The Latebirds - Last of the Good Ol' Days - Rootsy, Americana-styled music coming from Helsinki, Finland? Sure, why not? Producer Jim Scott (Wilco, Tom Petty, Sting) worked with Marcus Nordenstreng and band to hone their alt-country, retro folk/pop edge on their latest, released in Scandinavia last fall and finally given the green light for the U.S. this year..the band describes the project as a "70's styled concept album"...guests include Wilco-guitarist Nels Cline, singer/actress Minnie Driver and Heartbreaker Benmont Tench on keys...more DC
