Trombone Shorty - Self-described "superfunkrock" is the name of the game on this eagerly anticipated album from Grammy-nominated Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, one of New Orleans' hottest players, maven of inspired, modern (and real) R+B and international phenomenon...there's a visceral, spirited Crescent City jazz edge to the music, but this is also bandleader who's shared the stage with the likes of U2, Green Day and Dave Matthews...the A-list guests include Kid Rock, Lenny Kravitz, Warren Haynes and Jeff Beck // Release: For True (September 13, Verve) // Sounds like: it's hard to describe the paint-peeling, hi-energy level of Shorty and his band live -- this is simply genre-busting music that has one foot in the New Orleans music tradition and the other in just some whole other thing (or is that thang)...
Quote: "...being from the city of New Orleans and being able to hear different bands and musicians, as students of music, anything we hear or are influenced by, it naturally comes out in what we’re trying to do. If I spend a lot of time somewhere else, I’ll bring that back to New Orleans and show the band, and then we’ll just put it all in one pot. It’s just our sound, and it happened naturally." // What we like: when U2's The Edge says "we were mesmerized by him" you get a sense of what's going down here...Jeff Beck nailing a blistering guitar solo in the midst of the Lenny-Kravitz-styled funk/rocker "Do To Me"...Ledisi turns her co-write "Then There Was You" into a simmering, old-school R+B turn (more please?)...
