Blind Pilot - As the follow up to an acclaimed debut, sophomore album from these Portland, OR indie popsters is a punched up and confident step forward...frontman songwriter Israel Nebeker and his expanded band draw on pervasive elements of folk, rock and Americana to the songs, mixing up the organic, mostly acoustic backing with a bright rhythmic thrust...new project was produced by the band and Skyler Norwood and mixed by Tucker Martine (The Decemberists) // Release: We Are The Tide (September 13 // Sounds like: Originally a busking duo of Nebeker and drummer Ryan Dobrowski, the sound of Blind Pilot has expanded as the band has grown, adding an array of instruments including banjo, trumpet, harmonium and vibes...there's nothing really edgy to speak of here and the band pretty much colors within the lines -- but the fine songcraft and equally good instrumentation (and production) make this a keeper...
Quote: "Fortunately, the creative process has a way of obliterating your expectations, and while we had a plan for each song, eventually the songs told us the way they needed to be. We learned a whole lot in the process and when I listen to the album now, I hear all these good surprises we didn't know were going to be on there". - Israel Nebeker// What we like: lead track (and free download) "Keep You Right" features some tight vocal harmonies from co-Pilot Kati Claborn and some sweet acoustic picking...title track is an irresistable jangle of a melody strapped loosely to a pumping, slightly off-kilter rhythm, Nebeker's vocals a cool mix of sweet and tangy...
