David Berkeley - Fourth album in a decade from this fine singer/songwriter slipped under our radar when it was released earlier this year -- and it's too good not to shine a belated spotlight...Fan funded and written while Berkeley, his wife and one-year-old son, resided in a tiny village in the mountains of Corsica...Recorded in Atlanta with producer Will Robertson, the album features guests (and DC faves) Kim Taylor and Peter Bradley Adams...there's also a companion book telling tales of the making of the album and his travels // Release: Some Kind of Cure (Out Now) // Sounds like: there's plenty of sensitive, romantic tendencies infused in Berkeley's songs, reminiscent of classic introspective writers like Cat Stevens and Tim Buckley, but the unflinching honesty and flashes wry humor on display -- a hallmark of his live shows -- makes these unabashedly beautiful melodies an unpretentious and moving experience.../Quote: "I believe my music conjures an eerie optimism, a mysterious kind of hope. I think that sentiment hovers over most of the album and most of the book." // What we like: the 60's jangling folk/pop charms of "Parachute" featuring sweet harmonies and bridge solo vocals from Kim Taylor..."The Blood and the Wine" is finely spun gem of tender, thoughtful songcraft...Americana-shaded waltz "Steel Mill" deftly tells the tale of a ex-worker's struggles after his work is gone...
