Megan Henwood - Twenty-two-year old winner of the BBC2 Young Folk Award delivers her debut album, a sublime and luminous collection of modern acoustic songs that should have great appeal to fans of Laura Marling and Kate Walsh...last fall's debut single "What Elliott Said" -- written about one of her heroes, the late Elliott Smith -- rightly received a rapturous critical reception // Release: Making Waves (Just out in the U.K.) // Sounds like: Henwood pretty much has it all, blessed with a richly textured voice and serious songwriting chops...while there are elements of traditional Brit folk in Henwood's material, songs like poppy new single "Hope On the Horizon" would make fine fodder for a set at L.A.'s Hotel Cafe or N.Y.'s Living Room, more Ingrid Michaelson and Colbie Caillat than Steeleye Span // Quote: "I've been brought up with the idea of loving what you do and making beautiful things no matter how long it takes..." // What we like: "Elliott" is simply irresistible song, ticking rhythm backing, a tender-hooked melody melody and Henwood's forceful but sweetly nuanced singing..."Counting the Birds" brings to mind both Laura Marling and Joni Mitchell, gently impassioned folk enveloped in a swirl of acoustic strumming and elegant orchestration...

When you said she had a "gorgeous" voice I thought, yeah sure, but in this case it's true. Finally a woman with a real voice, not just breathy talky pretentiousness. And the songs say something. Very refreshing.
