Elbow - Mercury Prize-winning British rockers follow up 2008's successful The Seldom Seen Kid with a project that frontman Guy Garvey claims is a return to the band's roots // Release: Build A Rocket Boys (April 12 CD, out now digitally) // Quote: "If anything it sounds a lot like our first album there's perhaps some more big positive moments than there are on asleep in the back, but other than that vibe-wise it's a lot groovier than anything we've done in the last couple of years." Sounds like: refined art/rock built large for the grand stage while keeping things -- when called for -- on a more personal level...elements of Peter Gabriel's So period sneak in here and there (most notably on new single "Open Arms") // What we like: the pulsing beat and jittery piano lines of "Jesus Is A Rochdale Girl"... Garvey's statement that "to do something self-indulgent and inaccessible would have been a bit churlish. We write music for people to hear..."
