On the comfortable heels of her 25-year career retrospective last year -- Recollection -- k.d. lang revisits her past and sails into uncharted waters on Sing It Loud, her first work with a full-fledged band since the fabulous Reclines a couple of decades back. Recorded in Nashville at the studio of Guster's Joe Pisapia (who co-produced with Lang), Sing It Loud is a true collaborative effort with nearly all of the album's ten tracks co-writes (five with Pisapia, three with Siss Boom Bangers Daniel Clarke and Joshua Grange). There's even a celestially dreamy version of The Talking Heads' "Heaven." It's evident that things simply clicked as lang and the SSB knocked out eight songs in three days of recording.
"It's been an amazing ride..absolute satisfaction from a creative perspective" says lang of the album's sessions. From her very first, exceptionally productive day of writing with Pisapia, who lang met ("love at first sight") backstage on her 2009 Watershed tour, the singer knew that she was on to something potentially great. "Joe and I just have a language", she says, adding "it's beautiful." For Pisapia, he simply calls the project "honestly one of the best recordings I've ever hoped to be part of." As for us, we're just happy to have one of the greatest voices in modern music back in the spotlight, turning gorgeous tracks like the noirish torch ballad "Perfect Word", jazzy slow-dancing title track or soaring, dramatic retro pop of "I Confess" into something truly special.
