London indie (sm)art/pop upstarts Professor Penguin have had their new charmingly askew single (and free download) "Pilot" described by none other than Brian Eno as "such a beautiful piece" and, upon listening, who could disagree? What began as the vehicle for singer and songwriter Jonny Abraham has been expanded into a sophisticated outfit (complete with colorful horn shadings) that wanders confidently through odd jazz timings, squiggly-to-droning electronics, jangly melodies akimbo and Abraham's distinctive, matter-of-fact vocal style. We can't help but think of Charlie Fink's Noah and the Whale (yes, a good thing) as we sort through the head-turning "Pilot" -- there's a similar sense of sonic adventure and quirky gift of melody at work (and play). Full length debut Planes due February. Watch the fine video for "Planes 1" after the jump and listen to a magical cover of Bon Iver's "Calgary" below...
