Anna Ternheim - Fifth studio album since the Swedish singer/songwriter's 2004 debut full-length is yet another example of Ternheim's special ability in melding coolly plaintive, almost brittle folk/pop melodies with a warm, deeply intelligent personal style...the followup to 2008's fine "Leaving On A Mayday" is reflective of Ternheim's time on these shores -- there's a distinctive Americana feel to many of her new songs...ironically, a U.S. release is still TBA // Release: The Night Visitor (Out now in Europe) // Sounds like: dividing her time over the past few years between Stockholm and Brooklyn, Ternheim headed to Nashville with producer/guitarist Matt Sweeney and the result is imbued with a spacious country air, fingerpicked acoustics, mandolins and gentle rural shuffles...Ternheim's voice is again steeped in forlorn darkness, the soft textures of her vocals evoking sustained intimacy...
Quote: "The reason why I started is that I think I just suck up what’s going on around me with the people I know. My friends, my family, things that affect me outside of my life. As long as I feel inspired, I think writing is very intuitive. And it’s also a way of spending time, of just being. Time disappears when I write." // What we like: Ternheim captures a gentle intensity in her best songs, graceful, spare and sounding deceptively detached in that special Nordic chill..."Walking Aimlessly" is one her best, a mix of strum and thrum, layers of plucked strings and Ternheim's airy vocals merging with a sing-a-long harmonied chorus..."Black Light Shines" is a sure-footed but agile slow dance that could easily pass as a late night lullabye..."Lorelie-Marie" glistens with an upbeat Byrds-ian jangle...
