I Am Not From Here, the successor to East Village-based singer/songwriter Chris Riffle's exceptional, quietly elegant 2010 debut EP Introducing, arrived with a minimum of fanfare this past summer -- a move that seems completely in step with Riffle's own subdued folk and chamber/pop songs. Last year we heralded Riffle as "a writer and performer of uncommon depth and intimacy -- Nick-Drake-meets-Eliot-Smith" and with his latest five-song EP he's continued to bolster that particular penchant for sublime understatement. With a delicate, boyish voice that is equal parts wistful and whispery, Riffle and multi-instrumentalist producer Jimi Zhivago (Kim Taylor, Ollabelle) create acoustic soundscapes that gently build upon repeated guitar lines and a pulsing electronic rhythms. The effect is both effectively disarming and inviting, the subtleties of melody serving to draw you closer.
