RADAR: Hey Ocean

Vancouver indie (sm)art/pop trio Hey Ocean -- vocalist Ashleigh Ball, bassist/producer David Vertesi and guitarist David Beckingham -- will be releasing their overdue third studio full-length in 2012 but we got a taste of what they've been up to with Big Blue Wave, the recently released 4-song EP in Canada. The threesome have always been comfortable with a breezy blend of pop, soul and folk but the new songs -- led by the irresistable title track -- sound even bigger, bolder and brighter than before. After spending the summer last year with producer Gavin Brown (Matric, Sarah Harmer), Hey Ocean retreated back home to rework their songs themselves, tired but inspired and determined to do things their own way. The result is a juggernaut of oversized, crisp and crunchy pop led by Ball's commanding vocals, a throwback to the days when unabashedly catchy songs like these could rule the airwaves.
