Laura Veirs - After the birth of her first baby, Portland, OR performing songwriter Laura Veirs and her hubby and producer Tucker Martine (The Decemberists) set out to make an album of children's folk songs and lullabyes. After scouring folk archives for classic songs from over 100 years, Veirs puts a new spin on songs by the likes of Jimmie Rodgers, Woody Guthrie, Peggy Seeger and Harry Belafonte, keeping the campfire sing-a-long fun while adding a dimension that keeps adults happy, too // Release: Tumble Bee (November 8) // Sounds like: ukulele and banjo backings and Veir's sweet, almost girlish voice keep the mood light and whimsical while guests Colin Meloy (The Decemberists), Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Bela Fleck and in-demand drummer Brian Blade join in the merriment...“I love this record,” says Sufjan Stevens. “Laura’s folk songs for children prove that the best children’s music never gets old...”
Quote: “Many of these songs have been forgotten throughout the years. We wanted to bring these beloved songs to a new generation with an instrumentation that both honors their traditions and creates something unique.” -- Tucker Martine // What we like: most listeners will recognize many of the songs here, from the dreamy "All The Pretty Little Horses" to the irresistible "Jump Down Spin Around" but it is the more obscure gems such as the Colin Meloy duet "Soldier's Joy" by Jimmy Driftwood and some modern compositions (Karl Blau's title track) that add a unique twist to the collection...
