The Script - Science and Faith (U.K.)

While the American market still works on the breakout debut from Irish pop/rock trio The Script -- over 300,000 sold, still averaging 4k per week -- the U.K. market gets the second album Science and Faith September 13 (Sony) from frontman Danny O'Donoghue and band. Melodic hooks, distinctive American nu-soul references and songs that sound like a hybrid of Sting/The Police, The Fray and Maroon 5 make The Script one of the rare acts who can combine smarts and incisive songcraft for a mainstream, radio-friendly appeal -- and without dumbing down the process. Huge worldwide hits "Breakeven" and "The Man Who Can't Be Moved" helped pave the way for success (5x platinum sales in Ireland for the debut album) and the band toured for two years around the globe.

But when the band returned to Dublin, they were struck by the economic devastation wreaked by the international financial meltdown. "We returned...so excited about what we'd been doing," says drummer Glen Power. "But our country was facing the hardest times we've known. Our pals were back on the dole, had lost jobs and it hasn't been the time to celebrate. This album is inspired by that situation." New single "For the First Time" hits that theme and adds a bittersweet romantic angle as well, taking swelling choruses, an insidiously catchy hook, a bit of streetwise rhyme and O'Donoghue's raspy tenor out for a breezy, memorable spin.
