There are guitarists. And there are singer/songwriters. And then there's Andy Sheppard. A virtuoso guitarist who lives in Toronto, Sheppard finds new ways to stretch the boundaries of acoustic playing and songwriting, drawing in world music rhythms, ambient noise clips, looping and anything else that comes to mind. The result is both remarkably creative and completely accessible, songs that sit somewhere between Leo Kottke and Ry Cooder on one hand, Sufjan Stevens and any number of forward-thinking songwriters on the other. On "Farewell to Winter", taken from his intimate 2009 Live at Smash DVD, Sheppard mashes up African rhythms, slide guitar and his own rasp-tinged vocals for a song that lingers long after the final note. Look for a new Sheppard studio album featuring members of the marvelous Toronto band Snowblink later this year. Bonus audio track below: "And the Bells Rang." Heaven.
