When iconic songwriter Leonard Cohen was looking for vocalists to accompany him on his long-running international tour, he handpicked U.K. sibling singers and songwriters Charley and Hattie Webb and provided what one critic described as a "silk lining to his dry bark." After over 250 performances together since 2008, The Webb Sisters just wrapped their last two concerts with Cohen this past week bringing, as always, their shining solo moment -- a rapturous version of Cohen's "If It Be Your Will" -- to thousands of new listeners. In between the heavy tour schedule dates, the sisters have also found time to complete their long awaited second full-length album Savages with noted L.A. producer Peter Asher (James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt). Savages was finally announced for iTunes availability this past week on their website.
Fans of The Webb Sisters unfortunately won't find much that's new in the collection -- just four new songs added to the nine tracks taken from their earlier two EP's from 2009, The Other Side and Comes In Twos. But fresh tracks such as "Amelie's Song" and "Burn" continue to expand the duo's sound from the more traditional-based U.K. folk, utilizing Hattie's harp and Charlie's guitar, into more Americanized rootsy pop. Slide and steel guitar flourishes and "Burn"'s bristling, jangling drive are balanced by the a capella "Dark Sky" and lovely mandolin strummer "Yours Truly". Throughout Savages the Webb's signature intertwined and intricate harmony vocals flit and soar with a lighter-than-air delicacy.
