'13 REDUX: City and Colour

Glancing at the rearview mirror, we find those artists and albums that made the year special. One per day til the new year...

Canadian singer/songwriter Dallas Green -- under the musical pseudonym of City and Colour -- has been creating relatively quiet albums of warmth and sadness since 2005, spry and literate folk/rock gems that have earned him a solid following up north (where his 2011 album Little Hell debuted at #1) as well as in Australia and the U.S. Newly released album The Hurry & The Harm continues Green's pursuit of the of richly melodic, dramatically infused and exceptionally irony-free song. Recorded in Nashville and produced again by Alex Newport (Death Cab for Cutie, The Mars Votla), The Hurry & The Harm, like the best albums, makes the art of songwriting seem simple, where the turn of a phrase, the perfect chord progressions and the tenderist of hooks -- not to mention Green's soaring choirboy vocals -- merge into one gloriously hummable entity.
