Paul McCartney - Kisses On The Bottom

Paul McCartney - Teamed with famed producer and record exec Tommy Lipuma and joined by Diana Krall and her band, Macca -- turning 70 this spring -- digs back to the pure, sugary sweet nostalgia of his parent's generation with this plush, lushly upholstered collection of a dozen mostly romantic standards -- and a couple of new originals, too...Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder make guest appearances // Release: Kisses On the Bottom (February 7, Hear Music) // Sounds like: for those looking for a syrupy but sincere take on these vintage classics, McCartney's understated versions will most likely fill the bill... the iconic songwriter and ex-Beatle has turned out his own share of standards but this purely sentimental journey, while boasting some genuinely fine moments, comes off more as a calculated Starbucks marketing campaign and marred by McCartney's weak, occasionally warbly vocals...An interesting alternative? Just McCartney on vocals and bass, Krall and piano and Clapton on guitar --- now that would've been something...(Watch the EPK video below)

Quote: "I was thrown in the deep end because I'm not a jazz player. I didn't have a guitar or piano to hide behind. I was just put on what the engineers told me was Nat King Cole's mic, which was amazingly intimidating!...I just had to find my way through this. And once I got over the intimidated feeling, it became a pleasurable way to work". // What we like: the jazzy, blues-tinged "Get Yourself Another Fool", featuring Krall and Clapton, is our favorite here -- a slow, swaying and beautifully produced gem...McCartney's original "Only Our Hearts", while nearly drowning in strings, is a gorgeous melody that ranks up with the other classics included here (though Wonder's harmonica gives painful "Ebony and Ivory" flashbacks -- ouch)...

Bahamas - Barchords

Bahamas - Less than a year since Afie (AY-fee) Jurvanen released his fine debut album Pink Strat (Juno-nominated for Best Roots and Traditional Album), the in-demand Toronto-based guitarist (Feist, Amy Millan) and budding singer/songwriter delivers in full with an equally stark but sonically more varied effort // Release: Barchords (February 7, Brushfire) // Sounds like: the lean and low-keyed approach of Strat is again in full-view here, the intimate acoustic moments traded up for loose, often shimmering and organic electric core... utilizing his touring backup of drummer Jason Tait and bassist Darcy Yates, Jurvanen's limber low-wattage power-trio allows the listener the dramatic spaciousness of a stripped but sinewy production...(watch the excellent EPK video below)

Quote: "I like working with constrictions and forcing myself to work within certain parameters, like only bringing one guitar to the show.  I think that a good idea will shine through, whether you record it in a sophisticated studio or on a ghetto blaster." // What we like: the quietly soulful "Lost In the Light" is easily one of the best songs we've heard in a long, long time, a creeping Keith Richards-styled riff mixed with lovely backing harmonies..."Snowplow" lies somewhere between a dark hymn and bluesy standard, Jurvanen's raw voice sounding so close you can feel his breath on your ear..."Time and Time Again" has a nostalgic feel, a meandering bass line and slide guitar twang setting the stage...

Emma-Lee - Backseat Heroine

Canadian singer/songwriter Emma-Lee downshifts from the jazzy, cabaret-friendly art/pop of her '09 debut album Never Just A Dream for simpler, acoustic-leaning alt-country on her forthcoming sophomore album Backseat Heroine, due in early 2012 February 7 north of the border. What hasn't changed is that bluesy voice, what we've described as a "marvel of smoky texture while still maintaining exquisite clarity" -- a quality that rings true on the bedroom folk of "Just Looking" and the rockier shuffle "You're Not Coming By". Stay tuned for release details. Watch a live performance of the title track after the jump...

Jenny Owen Youngs - An Unwavering Band of Light

Jenny Owen Youngs - Referencing Johnny Cash, Kate Bush, Tom Waits and Jack White as her "spirit animals", Brooklyn songwriter returns with her third full length album...a Nettwerk label signing in 2006 yielded a series of fine, indie folk/pop albums and EP's with a smart, sharp edge... Youngs has now gone DIY with an impressive fan-funded disc once again produced and mixed by multi-instrumentalist Dan Romer (Ingrid Michaelson, Jukebox the Ghost)..."louder and faster" is how she sums up her new songs // Release: An Unwavering Band of Light (February 7) // Sounds like: the bright, melodic hard candy shell of Youngs' bristling pop choruses melts away to reveal an unexpectedly tart and tangy center...this is wry, often witty and ascerbic lyricism melded with a spangley melody and a voice that wavers between soft-focus sultry and commanding spunk...

Quote: "We approached the new album with the intent to explore grittier percussion and drum sounds, and to strive for a more live sound while still maintaining Dan’s studio precision. Hopefully that’s what will come across..." // What we like: Lead track "Your Apartment" balances a large sing-a-long chorus hook with an off-kilter rhythm and Youngs' plaintive but reserved vocals -- we love the analogy of checking out a potential lovers' apartment with the possibility of viewing an exposed soul...producer and arranger Romer just keeps getting better and better, a working relationship that sounds completely sympatico with Youngs' musical vision...

Maverick Sabre - Lonely Are the Brave

Maverick Sabre - London-based 21-year-old singer brings together gritty elements of hip-hop street beats, funky 60's retro-soul and sleek, punched up grooves that are deep, wide and impressive...with a smoky voice that's equal parts rough rasp and tender tone, Sabre has turned a few well-received singles into high anticipation for his major label debut album in the U.K. // Release: Lonely Are the Brave (February 6, Mercury UK) // Sounds like: an odd modern-vs.-vintage sound, obviously influenced by the work of Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson, is the foot-in-the-door calling card but Sabre comes to the table with a well-honed skill set that takes Brave firmly into his own world...the reverbed dub beats, Sabre's UB-40-friendly vocals and the dense orchestration at the heart of the production give much of the album a loose reggae-tinged feel...(stream samples of the full album after the jump)

Quote: "All my music is a mix of everything I've listened to over time. Some people listen to it and say that's a soul track, it's got a hip-hop influence, a bit of blues. Really, I want my music to be everything I've been influenced by, and my own stamp on that. I don't really know what label to put on it. If I had to say something it would be hip-hop inspired soulful folk music." // What we like: The broad soul swath of "Let Me Go" has a classic Stax Records sound, a killer beat melded to a strings and horns base that would have made Isaac Hayes smile...New single "No One" is both smoky and smokin', a grand Winehouse-styled track that's the perfect backdrop for Sabre's distinctively raw/smooth singing...the soaring, majestic cover of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" seals the proverbial deal..

Maverick Sabre - "No One" (from Lonely Are the Brave)
