What began as a songwriting exercise between Brit Carina Round and Canadian Justin Rutledge more than five years ago ended up as Early Winters, a quartet of musicians and tunesmiths one scribe cleverly termed "musically rootsy and geographically rootless." Perhaps its that far-flung situation that has yielded a sophomore album Vanishing Act (February 25) that has an appealingly weightless feel to it, tied to no particular style or genre, while still demonstrating some solid musical heft. Guitars shimmer and twang, Round and Rutledge evoke a mellow Lindsey Buckingham & Stevie Nicks harmonious vibe and the songs tie together sumptuous dream pop, Hotel Cafe melodies and vintage Laurel Canyon folk/rock.
