The Lumineers - 'The Lumineers'

Wesley Schultz, Jeremiah Fraites and Neyla Pekarek are The Lumineers, a Denver-based trio of modern acoustic Americana self-described as "born out of sorrow, powered by passion, ripened by hard work." The sorrow of note came from the loss to a drug overdose of Jeremiah's brother who was also the best friend of Schultz. Writing songs together in New York, the pair moved to Colorado and expanded their sound, smoothing some of their frayed edges with the addition of classically trained cellist -- and now multi-instrumentalist -- Pekarek. The resulting self titled debut (April 3, Dualtone) is a collection of happily unkempt, resonant and timeless songs mixing unvarnished campfire verve, modern indie pop appeal and the energy of a clap-and-stomp tent revival. "Morning Song" is a particularly fetching track of ragged Crazy Horse-styled riffs and the intensity of a heartfelt and soulful call to arms.
