Sophie Hunger - Sophie Hunger

Superb Zurich-based singer/songwriter -- and DC fave -- Sophie Hunger finally gets a stateside release with the release of a self-titled U.S. debut (April 26, Manimal) compiling tracks from last year's 1983 with a handful of songs from her 2008 album Monday's Ghost. On her more recent work, Hunger ratchets up the tightly wound, boundary-pushing atmospheric folk, blues, jazz and alt-pop shadings of Ghost, moving confidently into the "yin"-like dark, intelligent sphere of the likes of Fiona Apple, Jesca Hoop, Cortney Tidwell, Bjork, Leslie Feist and Regina Spektor. If you need a smart, razor sharp alternative to the bevy of female "yang"-sters writing bubbly, overly sentimental folk/pop ditties, may we suggest taking a deep breath and diving into Hunger's bracing music.
This isn't about complex vs. simple. Many of Sophie Hunger's most arresting moments are relatively basic and stripped in production, from the lovely piano balladry of "Train People" to the minor chord angular jangle of "Your Personal Religion" or haunting "Headlights." Clearly, succinctly and with a penchant for edgy surprise -- check out the effortless drama summoned in "Leave Me With the Monkeys" -- Hunger's bold musical vision is focused sharply with a minimum of decorative production, utilizing her fine band to achieve something truly special. This is one to spend time with, savor and explore. Stream the full album (and get a free 'Monkeys" download here.
