Sonia Leigh - 1978 December

Sonia Leigh - Dixie-fied alt-country twang meets raspy and rockin' pout on this energized, tough-as-nails album...Leigh cut her teeth bangin' the club stage boards with the likes of Marc Broussard and Zac Brown (who signed her to his own label), learning how to dish up soulful, rough-and-ready roadhouse fare // Release: 1978 December (September 27, Southern Ground) // Sounds like: take a heap of rootsy folk/rock, add a shot of Jack Daniels and some kickin' country swagger and then turn up the heat...this may have been created in the studio, but it really comes alive on stage as Leigh cranks the sound and the energy into a stompfest of bluesy barstool sing-a-longs and tattered troubadour laments...
Quote: "I almost feel like a different person when I'm on stage. It takes every emotion I can possibly have and lets it all out into the universe. There is nothing that could replace the feeling I feel on stage. It's pure energy." // What we like: Leigh's Georgia roots shine on the gritty "My Name Is Money" while "Ain't Dead Yet" references 70's Southern California lyrically and with a jaunty Eagle-ish riff-meets-bass-drum bounce -- imagine Joan Jett covering Jackson Browne...the title track takes things down a notch, a rough-hewn acoustic ballad of wry introspection...someone described Leigh's voice as "slow cooked Georgia barbecue" -- we can't argue with that...
