Matthew Sweet - Modern Art

Matthew Sweet - If anyone could stake the claim as archival keeper of the 60's and 70's Southern California jangle/pop, folk/rock sound it's this acclaimed songwriter and producer (notably of the new Bangles reunion album)...in addition to celebrating the 20th anniversary of his classic, critically adored breakthrough album "Girlfriend", Sweet returns with his lucky thirteenth album, his first new studio project since 2008's Sunshine Lies // Release: Modern Art (September 27) // Sounds like: the bright Rickenbacker-styled Byrds-ian guitar lines rule once more on songs like the lead track "She Walks The Night" but Sweet indicates that his latest is both more "modern" and "artsy", a subtle injection of darker moods and textures...

Quote: "Part of the way I think I was looking at Modern Art in making it was trying to come at things in a little bit more abstract way but without becoming cold or minimalist, and keeping some kind of heart and feeling in it while still messing around with stuff." - Sweet to Rolling Stone //  What we like: the revivalist tag still applies -- he did after all release a pair of fine 60's covers albums with Bangle Susannah Hoffs -- but Sweet still manages to sound fresh and vital in his songwriting and performing...
