Lex Land - Were My Sweetheart to Go

Lex Land - Eclectic L.A.-to-Austin singer/songwriter follows up her promising 2008 debut Orange Days on Lemon Street with a new collection of personal, genre-blurring folk/pop // Release: Were My Sweetheart to Go (August 16, Intelligent Noise) // Sounds like: Land's seductive, slow-smoked and note-bending vocals lend a slightly jazzy touch to the torchy, soul-bearing songs...the lyrics, often delivered in a tumbling, stream of consciousness flow, reveal a young woman whose own philosophy and history of troubled relationships are the inspiration for her always-interesting songcraft...

Quote: “The original idea for the title Were My Sweetheart to Go was borne from those burning questions inside you when you give yourself to someone and get comfy. The 'What If?' What if all your doubts are true? What if you are as undeserving as you think you might be in your lowliest of moments? What if your love were to leave …then what?” // What we like: the wistful sadness that permeates much of Sweetheart finds some respite in a couple strutting, upbeat songs ("Oh My", "How Well You Do") but we think the Land's cause is best served in the more intimate moments: the gently soulful "Ides of March", pulsing folk lament "All This Talk of Dreaming" and the powerful piano art-pop hymn "What Happens Now" (streaming exclusively here)...
