Eliza Doolittle - Eliza Doolittle

Does the world need yet another spunky, spangly 20-something Brit pop-tart? We didn't think so either until we got a taste of the 60's retro-influenced songs of one Eliza Doolittle, aka Eliza Sophie Card. Her self-titled debut album released this past summer in the U.K. is a marvel of relentlessly, unapologetically sunny songcraft (she wrote or cowrote them all) that is all about attitude (or maybe lack of it) and irresistably catchy melodies. With no trendy dance blipped beats, rap refrains or autotuning in sight we're not sure how the self-titled ED debut will fare on these shores when it arrives March 22 April 19 via Capitol (a digital-only EP Meet Eliza Doolittle hit November 23). But we do know it's simply witty, smart and a whole lot of fun.
Working with producers and songwriters such as The Bird and the Bee's Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen, Sia) and Craigie Dodds (Amy Winehouse), Doolittle clearly has a knack for penning effortlessly infectious songs that never have a whiff of self-conscious trifle. The bouncy Motown-styled "Pack Up" (with "the old kit bag" chorus tossed in) tosses in a kitchy kitchen-sink's worth of revved up old-school instrumentation but it's also, in a stripped acoustic version (check the player below), a fresh serving of jazzy folk/pop. New single "Rollerblades" is a jewel of classic British music hall charm, Doolittle's natural, unaffected singing (and closing whistle!) the sassy sweet icing on the proverbial cake. Says the BBC: "If you can handle a lot of wacky in your pop music, there’s a lovely album here waiting for you." Watch the official "Pack Up" video after the jump.
