Alexi Murdoch - Towards the Sun

With all the great exposure given to the exceptionally talented Brit neo-folk singer/songwriter Alexi Murdoch over the past few years we were beginning to wonder when we were going to actually see the full release of Towards the Sun, his first album since the breakout '06 debut Time Without Consequence. Beginning with a few post-Time tracks that have appeared most notably on the soundtrack to the Sam Mendes film Away We Go, the new seven-track project has been available only from Murdoch directly on-line or at his live gigs -- a typical move from the notoriously label-shy (and publcicity averse) performer. Murdoch's nocturnal, stark acoustic songs have been most often compared to the late, legendary U.K. folk trailblazer Nick Drake even down to the slow-smoked voice and distinctive guitar work.
Not a moment too soon, Towards the Sun will now finally be released March 8 via his own Zero Summer Records. Initially recorded in Vancouver in a single night while on his 2009 North American tour, the project was later reworked in New York with the help of musicians from Brooklyn's independent music scene, including Jon Natchez (Beirut), Kelly Pratt (Beirut) and Kyle Resnick (The National). He'll mark the new release with a sold-out performance at Lincoln Center's prestigious American Songbook series on February 17 before playing in select U.S. cities in February. Ahh -- at last.
