My Morning Jacket, Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, The Avett Brothers, Conor Oberst and Sara Watkins are among twelve those honoring the enduring songcraft of John Prine with Broken Hearts and Dirty Windows: Songs of John Prine arriving June 22 (Oh Boy Records). The new tribute comes forty years after the legendary Chicago songwriter entered the studio to record his self-titled debut album, a collection considered by some to be one of the finest songwriter discs ever and boasting such classic songs as "Angel From Montgomery", "Illegal Smile" and "Hello In There." Prine has continued to write -- three studio albums since 2000 -- as well as tour, documented last month with the release of his In Person and On Stage and just days ago with an appearance at the Bonarroo Festival.
"The humble, heart-broke and beautifully playful disposition of his songs feels more his nature than his art," writes Vernon of Prine in the Broken Hearts notes. "And thus we believe everything he sings." There's no doubt that all of the varied contributors to this project have been influenced by Prine and his songs, there's an economy of style that simply and effectively bores to the core of these works rendering art with the most basic of irreverent, soulful truths firmly planted within.
