Punch Brothers - Antifogmatic

Americana/neo-bluegrass masters Punch Brothers have been at the forefront of the progressive acoustic musical frontier since Chris Thile founded the band in 2006 as an instrumental offshoot of his successful Nickel Creek. Punch, the quintet's 2008 debut, garnered exceptional reviews with The New Yorker calling it “wide-ranging and restlessly imaginative" and The Boston Globe describing Thile and crew "a virtuosic revelation." Highly anticipated June 15 album Antifogmatic promises to be much more of a band effort with collaborations at work on each of the disc's ten tracks. Punch, on the other hand, was primarily the presentation of Thile's own ambitious multi-part composition "The Blind Leading the Blind".

Also of note on Antifogmatic is the work of multi-instrumentlist and producer Jon Brion (Fiona Apple, Dido, Elliott Smith) who helped shape the sound on the new project and someone, according to Punch Brother Gabe Witcher, "equally as well versed in pop and rock as in instrumental music." And of the album's title? "'Antifogmatic' is an old term for a bracing beverage, generally rum or whiskey, that a person would have before going out to work in rough weather to stave off any ill effects," explains Thile. "This batch of tunes could be used in much the same way, and includes some characters who would probably benefit mightily, if temporarily, from a good antifogmatic." Recommended. A special deluxe edition includes a four-song instrumental EP and a seven-song DVD filmed during the band’s residency at NYC’s The Living Room.

The title of this post ought to be changed: the band is Punch Brothers, not "The" Punch Brothers.
