Broken Social Scene - Forgiveness Rock Record

Toronto's Broken Social Scene has always seemed an eternally morphing amalgam of Canadian indie rock talent, a loose network of musicians and songwriters who have collaborated on some of the most invigorating and creative music to come from north of the border over the past decade. A "kitchen sink" attitude towards style and a willingness to embrace often experimental and grandiose musical ideas has made each BSS project -- and the members' own incestuous solo efforts -- worth checking out. Founded by Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, conspirators Emily Haines, Leslie Feist, Amy Millan, Jason Collett and many others have contributed to the "revue"-styled goings on.

New Forgiveness Rock Record, arriving May 4 via Arts and Crafts, is the first real BSS album in five years and something of a more focused break from the past as the core six-member group pretty much handling the writing and basic in-studio sound. A pared down guest list has given more emphasis on the outfit's creative core and the result is a fresh, bracing new album that maintains each member's more progressive ideas while keeping the sound cohesive and ideas challenging. Songs such as dual lead tracks, "Forced to Love" and "All to All", along with the vocal trio of Feist/Millan/Haines on "Sentimental X" are each diverse visions that keep the "wonder what's next" attitude an integral force at play, an increasingly rare thrill in the often paint-by-numbers world of indie pop.
