Barenaked Ladies - All In Good Time

You can be forgiven for wondering if the world needed another album from the long running Barenaked Ladies. After more than 20 years and 10 albums -- peaking in 1999 with the 4x platinum Stunt and hit single "One Week" -- it would be easy to dismiss BNL as simply treading water -- and water under the bridge at that. So it's with a modicum of surprise -- and pleasure -- that we report that the new March 30 album All In Good Time, made with original producer Michael Phillip Wojewoda, finds the Canadian pop/rockers in a particularly inspired place creatively. Maybe it's the soul searching and regrouping that's come with the departure of BNL cofounder Steve Page or any other number of game-changing events that have beset the band (family deaths, a non-fatal plane crash). But there's no mistakening the newfound energy and good vibes that that All In Good Time brings to the fold.
“We’re redefining who we are, and how we communicate as a band, and as friends," observes guitarist, vocalist and lead writer Ed Robertson. "The album has an emotional rawness to it that we may have shied away from in the past. I think we pushed ourselves to heavier places, and also allowed for some really spacious moments." Amidst the album's fourteen strikingly diverse songs, we're particularly drawn to lead single "You Run Away", a dreamy mid-tempo track with echoing Coldplay-styled piano lines and a gently building intensity. Another highlight is the extraordinary "Ordinary", a wonderfully old-fashioned pop/rocker stuffed with stunning harmonies, finger-picked guitar rhythms and a melody that ingratiates with simple pleasures. Recommended.
