Sting - Live In Berlin (CD/DVD)

New November 22 CD/DVD (and Blu-Ray) collection Sting: Live In Berlin captures the Police-man performing many of his best known songs backed by a 45-piece orchestra, a concept he first introduced via his Symphonicities studio album this past spring. He originally described the approach as being able to work with "a whole new palette of colours" and clearly he's enjoying the creative reinvention on stage, bringing dramatically reworked versions of songs well-known and relatively (by Sting hitmaker standards) more obscure.
Happily for his fans, what could have been simply another way to repackage and market his music -- and sell lots of concert tickets -- has turned out to be an exceptionally well thought out idea. Unlike the half-baked, lackluster Police reunion tour, this not only works, it works beautifully. One of the best things about Live In Berlin is that this simply isn't a live version of the Symphonicities album: only one song on the earlier album is part of the 14-track Berlin CD and the new DVD adds three more songs including "Fields of Gold", "Shape of My Heart" and "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You." Sting has always had both drama and rich melodic currents running through his best material and here the retinkered songs and lush string arrangements come off as a perfect match.
