The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger - Acoustic Sessions

What do you get when you put the well-gened Sean Lennon and model/main squeeze Charlotte Kemp Muhl together in a studio with some cool toys to play with? Well, you get the unfortunately-monikered The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger along with some odd and oddly appealing music on the duo's debut album Acoustic Sessions, arriving October 26 on their own Chimera label. As Lennon's first new creative output since 2006's Friendly Fire, Acoustic Sessions is a surreal and occasionally obtuse menagerie of left-field, retro art-pop but not without its sugary charm and refreshingly tart aftertaste.
While the album's nine diverse tracks may dip deeply into mystical psych-folk there's enough finely tailored pop ornaments hanging throughout to keep things tantalizing (and we confess affection for quirky lyrics like "wearing Freudian slips like evening gowns" from "Rainbows In Gasoline"). And who can deny the deft display of unadulterated musicianship (particularly from the surprisingly multi-instrumental Muhl)? As the title indicates, the medium channeled here is primarily folk based (an electric excursion is planned for next spring) and Lennon and Muhl's carefully entwined vocal harmonies and subtle melodic turns make for a collection of eccentric, ultimately pretty tunes that bask in their own bubbly intoxication.
